| Comprehensive Exam | Honors Thesis / Coursework |
An honors thesis, to be written in Spanish, will normally originate from an area of interest already explored in an upper level course. The student will: consult with a member of the Spanish division who would agree to serve as thesis director; will formulate the prospectus of the general area, including the individual topic, a reading list, and a list of suggested thesis readers. Students applying to do Honors works will submit their application to the Spanish section in the spring of their junior year no later than May 1. (Applications may be obtained from Mrs. Dickerson, Tucker 407.) Spanish section faculty will evaluate the proposal and, if approved, will appoint two readers from within the University, including at least one from the Spanish division, to assist the thesis director.Return to the top of the page.During the summer between the junior and senior years, the candidates will follow a prescribed reading program in preparation for enrollment in Spanish 493 in the fall and winter terms. The fall course is a 3 hour no credit course, the winter course is a 3 hour 6 credit course. These are the two Honors courses above and beyond the required 5 for the Spanish major. If changes in the proposal occur as a result of the preparatory summer work, they must be approved by the Spanish faculty by October 1 of the senior year.
In addition, during the summer between the junior and senior years, the candidates will prepare independently for the comprehensive exam . (See description below.)
If at any stage of the Honors process the Honors Committee --the director and the two readers-- thinks that the candidate's progress is insufficient or if grades for the comprehensive exams or the thesis are below A-, the department may award credit for Sp. 403 to the extent justified by the quality and quantity of the work submitted.
The comprehensive exam (pass/fail) will be given to candidates by the end of the third week of the fall semester. This written exam will measure:Return to the top of the pagea) knowledge of Peninsular and Latin American literary history as presented in Spanish 207 and 208.Spanish 207 and 208 will each provide one study question; each 300-level course which the candidate has attended will provide two study questions. The candidates will be given a copy of their study questions prior to the end of the spring of the junior year, but not the final selection of these questions for the exam itself.b) knowledge of the material covered in 300-level courses.
A student may choose a concentration in either Peninsular or Latin American literature and the comprehensive exam will be weighted accordingly but will not be exclusive to one or the other area.
A provisional pass will require a further written exam on the one deficient area, to be taken no later than the end of the sixth week of the fall semester. Subsequently, the candidate will either continue on to the Honors Thesis (pass) or the topic will convert to a fall semester 3 credit Spanish 403 (fail).
During the fall term the candidate will meet on a regular basis with his or her thesis director to discuss the progress of the thesis work and further readings and will prepare a detailed outline and substantial bibliography by the end of the fall termReturn to the top of the pageIn the winter term, the candidate will continue to meet regularly with his or her thesis director to discuss and evaluate progress of the written work, and will submit a first draft to the director before the sixth week of the winter term . The director will suggest appropriate revisions, and will call on the readers as appropriate. Under the guidance of the thesis director, the student must submit the revised thesis (including bibliography), to the director, the two readers, and each additional member of the Spanish faculty by the end of the winter semester.
The final version of the thesis, complete with bibliography, will be submitted no later than May 1 of the senior year. The public defense of the thesis will take place no later than the middle of May.
