La Casa Hispánica

Washington and Lee University, in its support of the Casa Hispánica, seeks to establish a social and academic environment in which students promote communication in Spanish and enhanced knowledge of the numerous and different Hispanic cultures. Both inside and outside the house, Casa residents share meals and activities that have to do with the Hispanic world. Residents of the Casa have the responsibility to participate in residential and activity planning and to enforce respect of the Spanish-only rule in common areas. The Casa provides students with an environment, a true "home," in which they learn and share language and culture. The Casa benefits Washington and Lee University as it draws students from the whole campus and fosters comprehension among global cultures.

For more information about the Casa Hispanica or to apply for residence see the Department Head of Romance Languages

LACS

The Program in Latin American and Caribbean Studies is an interdisciplinary program that allows students to explore the concepts of civilization, culture, and society as applied to the region of Latin America and the Caribbean.  As such, students will find that the requirements for completing the LACS program logically complement a Spanish or French major.

The program’s curriculum draws from a variety of disciplines—including history, literature, economics, politics, and sociology,--in an effort to explore the ways the region has been shaped by the meeting of Amerindian, African, and European peoples.  Through this framework students examine the commonalities and diversity within the region as well as the ways these factors differ from or complement the characteristic traits of North American societies.

Students who complete the program can gain the background necessary for careers in teaching, bilingual education, social work, government or international organizations, business, journalism, and specialized non-profit organizations, and/or for graduate work in Latin American Studies and related disciplines.

For more information visit the Latin American and Caribbean Studies website

ESOL

The mission of the English for Speakers of Other Languages Program is to facilitate communication within the increasingly diverse population in Rockbridge County. Although ESOL has focused on the Latina/o community, the program works with speakers of all languages. We offer formal ESOL classes and one-on-one tutoring arrangements, Spanish classes for adults, free translation of documents (Spanish-English/English-Spanish), and a hotline to provide immediate interpreting  services.

For more information visit the English for Speakers of Other Languages website
