COURSE DESCRIPTION
SPANISH 202 |
This six-credit course offers students direct exposure to the language, culture and people of Spain. The course is offered in its six-week form possibly for the last time during Spring Term, 2009. In Spring, 2009, students will spend the first three weeks in Salamanca and the second three weeks in Madrid. |
ACADEMICS |
Courses are given in grammar and conversation with some additional instruction in culture, history and civilization by native professors through the Estudio Internacional Sampere. Students are tracked for language courses but W&L students will join together for culture and civilization courses. Students will keep a journal, in Spanish, as part of their academic evaluation. Classes meet for four hours each day, Monday through Friday. Courses are designed so that students can take maximum advantage of their presence in Spain; that is, class activities are often coordinated with extracurricular activities. Students who intend to spend the spring term in Spain are encouraged to take Spanish 211 (Culture and Civilization) during the winter term prior to their travel. |
ACCOMMODATIONS |
Students are housed in Spanish homes screened and selected by the Estudio Internacional. They are provided with three meals/day and laundry service. In most instances, W&L students will share accommodations with another W&L student on the program. |
EXCURSIONS |
The program usually includes weekend excursions to points of interest, as well as a 3-day overnight excursion. In 2009, we will be going to the cities of La Alberca-Peņa de Francia OR Zamora and Segovia [from Salamanca] and to Sevilla and Toledo [from Madrid]. |
ACTIVITIES |
The program directors will organize additional activities including theater performances, concerts, museum visits, and sports events, depending on the cultural calendar. |
ADMINISTRATION |
Two members of the Romance Languages Department will accompany the group to Spain. These professors may attend classes, organize cultural activities and supervise the administration of the W&L program in concert with colleagues from the Estudio Internacional Sampere. |
EXPENSES |
The estimated program cost for Spring 2009 is 2,530 Euros, which, as of September 1, 2008, is equal to $3,702 (keep tabs on the exchange rate for updated prices). The W&L charge will be $3,900, which includes the $50 insurance fee that can be refunded if students have proof of appropriate insurance. This fee includes program fees, textbooks, excursions and other activities, room, full board and laundry. It does not include airfare and personal expenses. Students are responsible for securing their own passports and for making travel arrangements to and from Spain. A deposit of $250.00 is due by, Tuesday, December 2, 2008 to secure a place in the orientation and spring term program. The remainder will be billed in three installments. |
